Emilio Gino Segrè (1905-1989)

Awarded the Prize “for his discovery of the antiproton.”

American experimental physicist. Segrè was born at Tivoli, Italy on Februry 1, 1905. He studied at the University of Rome obtained his doctorate there in 1928. In 1932 he was appointed Assistant Professor at the University of Rome in 1936 was appointed Director of the Physics Laboratory at the University of Palermo. In 1938, he moved to America became a naturalized American citizen in 1944. He was Professor of the University of California at Berkeley worked from 1943 to 1946 at Los Alamos on development of the atom bomb. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Segrè died in Lafayette, California on April 22, 1989.
