Hans Albrecht Bethe (1906-2005)

Awarded the Prize “for his contributions to the theory of nuclear reactions, especially his discoveries concerning the energy production in stars.”

American theoretical physicist. Bethe was born in Strasbourg, France on July 2, 1906. He studied at the University of Frankfurt the University of Munich, where took his Ph.D. in 1928. He became a naturalized American citizen in 1941. He was Professor of Cornell University the Dean of the Department of Theoretical Physics in the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory engaged in assembling the first atomic bomb. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Bethe died in Ithaca on March 6, 2005.
