
Hannes Olof Gösta Alfvén (1908-1995)
Awarded the Prize “for the fundamental work discoveries in magneto-hydrodynamics with fruitful applications in different parts of plasma physics.”Swedish physicist. Alfvén was born in Norrkoeping, Sweden on May 30, 1908. He was educated at the University of Uppsala where he received his Ph.D. in 1934. He subsequently worked at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, where he served as Professor of the Theory of Electricity, Professor of Electronics, Professor of Plasma Physics. He was a foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences. Aldvén died in Djursholm, Sweden on April 2, 1995.
