Ivar Giaever (1929-2025)

Awarded the prize “for his experimental discoveries regarding tunneling phenomena in semiconductors and superconductors, respectively.”

American physicist engineer. Giaever was born in Bergen, Norway on April 5, 1929. He graduated from the Norwegian Institute of Technology in 1952. He moved to Canada in 1954 in 1956 he emigrated to the United States became a USA citizen in 1964, in the same year he obtained his Ph.D. from Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Giaever died on June 20, 2025 in Schenectady, NY, USA.
