Sir Martin Ryle (1918-1984)

Awarded the Prize “for his pioneering research in radio astrophysics: Ryle for his observations inventions, in particular of the aperture synthesis technique.”

British radio astronomer. Ryle was born at Brighton, Sussex on September 27, 1918. He studied graduated at Oxford University. He received a fellowship to the Cavendish Laboratory of Cambridge University in 1948 was appointed Lecturer in physics. In 1959 he became the first Cambridge Professor of Radio Astronomy in 1957 the Director of the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory in Cambridge. Ryle was appointed Astronomer Royal in 1972 a member of the Royal Society. Ryle died on October 14, 1984 at Cambridge.
