John Hasbrouck van Vleck (1899-1980)

Awarded the Prize “for his fundamental theoretical investigations of the electronic structure of magnetic disordered systems.”

America theoretical physicist. Van Vleck was born at Middletown, Connecticut on March 13, 1899. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1920 received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1922. He was a professor of the University of Minnesota, the University of Wisconsin Harvard University. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, President of American Physical Society Vice President of American Association for the Advancement of Sciences. van Vleck died in Cambridge, Massachusetts on October 27, 1980.
