
Arthur Leonard Schawlow (1921-1999)
Awarded the Prize “for his contribution to the development of laser spectroscopy.”American physicist. Schawlow was born in Mount Vernon, New York on May 5, 1921. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1941, where he received his Ph.D. degree in 1949. From 1951 to 1961, he was a physicist at Bell Telephone Laboratories. He was Professor Chairman of the Department of Physics of Stanford University. He was a member of the American Physical Society, the National Academy of Sciences American Academy of Arts Sciences. Schawlow died on April 28, 1999 at Palo Alto, California.
