William Alfred Fowler (1911-1995)

Awarded the Prize “for his theoretical experimental studies of the nuclear reactions of importance in the formation of the chemical elements in the universe.”

American physicist astronomer. Fowler was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on August 9, 1911. He graduated in 1933 from Ohio State University. He obtained his Ph.D. in 1936 from California Institute of Technology was immediately appointed to the staff as Professor of Physics. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Arts Sciences President of American Physical Society. Fowler died at Pasadena, California on March 14, 1995.
