Gerd Binnig (1947- )

Awarded the Prize “for his design of the scanning tunneling microscope.”

German physicist. Binnig was born in Frankfurt, Germany on July 20, 1947. He graduated from Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt received his doctorate from the University of Frankfurt in 1978. He joined a physics group in the IBM Zürich Research Laboratory. In 1990 he joined the Supervisory Board of the Daimler Benz Holding.
