Leon M. Lederman (1922-2018)

Awarded the Prize “for the neutrino beam method the demonstration of the doublet structure of the leptons through the discovery of the muon neutrino.”

American experimental physicist. Lederman was born in New York on July 15, 1922. He graduated from the City College of New York in 1943. After receiving his Ph.D. at Columbia University in 1951, he remained there for 28 years. He became Director of the Nevis Labs in 1961. In 1979, he became Director of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. He joined in 1989 the faculty of the University of Chicago as Professor of Physics in 1991 he became President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Lederman died on October 3, 2018 in Rexburg, Idaho, USA.
