Melvin Schwartz (1932-2006)

Awarded the Prize “for the neutrino beam method the demonstration of the doublet structure of the leptons through the discovery of the muon neutrino.”

American physicist. Schwartz was born in New York City on November 2, 1932. At the age of 12 he entered the Bronx High School of Science in New York. He became an undergraduate at Columbia in 1949, to stay there through his graduate years took up a faculty position as Assistant Professor in 1958. He became Associate Professor in 1960 Professor in 1963. In 1966, he went to Stanford, joining research works. In 1991 he became Associate Director of High Energy Nuclear Physics at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Schwartz died in Twin Falls, Idaho on August 28, 2006.
