Jerome I. Friedman (1930- )

Awarded the Prize “for his pioneering investigations concerning deep inelastic scattering of electrons on protons bound neutrons, which have been of essential importance for the development of the quark model in particle physics.”

American physicist. He was born in Chicago on March 28, 1930. He was educated at the university in his native city gained his Ph.D. there in1956. After spending three years at Stanford, he moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1961, was later appointed to Chair of Physics Department. In 1980, he became Director of the Laboratory for Nuclear Science at MIT then served as Head of the Physics Department. He is a member of the High Energy Advisory Panel for the Department of Energy also Chairman of the Scientific Policy Committee of the Superconducting Super Collider Laboratory.
