Georges Charpak (1924-2010)

Awarded the Prize “for his invention development of particle detectors, in particular the multiwire proportional chamber.”

French physicist. Charpak was born on August 1, 1924 in Dabrovica, Pol. He became a naturalized French citizen in 1946. He was educated at Ecole des Mines in Paris graduated with a Bachelor of Science. In 1954 he received his Ph.D. from College de France. He worked successively at Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique Centre Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire. Charpak died in Paris, France on September 29, 2010.
