Frederick Reines (1918-1998)

Awarded the Prize “for pioneering experimental contributions to lepton physics, for the detection of the neutrino.”

American experimental physicist. Reines was born at Paterson, New Jersey on March 16, 1918. He was educated at the Stevens Institute of Technology gained his Ph.D. at New York University. From 1944 to 1959 he was a group leader at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. In 1959 he was appointed Head of the Physics Department at the Case Institute of Technology, was Professor of Physics Dean of Physical Sciences at the University of California at Irvine. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences the American Academy of Arts Sciences. Reines died on August 26, 1998 in Orange, California.
