William D. Phillips (1948- )

Awarded the Prize “for development of methods to cool trap atoms with laser light.”

American physicist. Phillips was born on November 5, 1948 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He started his studies at Juniata College in 1966. He completed his Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1976. He then joined the staff of the National Bureau of Stards Technology, Maryl.
