Zhores I. Alferov (1930-2019)

Awarded the Prize “for basic work on information and communication technology and for developing semiconductor heterostructures used in high-speed- and opto-electronics.”

Russian physicist. Alferov was born in Vitebsk, Belorussia on March 15, 1930. He graduated from the V. I. Ulyanov (Lenin) Electrotechnical Institute in Leningrad. He was Director of the Physico-Technical Institute was appointed to Dean of the Faculty of Physics Technology at the St Petersburg Technical University. From 1989 onward, he has been Vice-President of the USSR (Russian) Academy of Sciences President of its St Petersburg Scientific Center. Zhores I. Alferov died on March 1, 2019 in St. Petersburg, Russia.
