José Echegaray Y Eizaguirre (1832-1916)

Awarded the Prize “in recognition of the numerous and brilliant compositions which, in an individual and original manner, have revived the great traditions of the Spanish drama.”

Spanish dramatist and poet. José de Echegaray was born in Madrid on April 9, 1832. He studied economics at an engineering school and assumed the offices as Minister of Public Works and Finance Minister in the Government. In 1874, he withdrew from political life and engaged himself in writing. He died in Madrid on September 14, 1916.
