Paul Johann Ludwig Heyse (1830-1914)

Awarded the Prize “as a tribute to the consummate artistry, permeated with idealism, which he has demonstrated during his long productive career as a lyric poet, dramatist, novelist and writer of world-renowned short stories.”

German writer. Heyse was born in Berlin on March 15, 1830. He studied classical philology at Berlin University for two years, then he changed to Romance philosophy in Bonn, and at the beginning of 1852 he received the doctorate. In the spring of 1854, King Maximilian II of Bavaria offered him a position in Munich to take part in the former’s symposia, weekly societies at which scholars and poets gathered. Heyse died in Munich on April 2, 1914.
