Gerhart Johann Robert Hauptmann (1862-1946)
Awarded the Prize “primarily in recognition of his fruitful, varied and outstanding production in the realm of dramatic art.”German playwright. Hauptmann was born on November 15, 1862 in Bad Obersalzbrunn. He was educated at the village school and later went to Breslau, attending a Gymnasium. Some years later, he entered the Art academy of Breslau and learned sculpturing, then he exchanged successively for the University of Jena, Rome and Berlin. In Rome he decided upon literature. Hauptmann died in Agnetendorf, Germany on June 8, 1946.
