Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941)

Awarded the Prize “because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has made his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of the literature of the West.”

Indian poet, writer, artist and social activist. Tagore was born in Calcutta, India on May 7, 1861. He was educated at home; and although at seventeen he was sent to England for formal schooling, he did not finish his studies there.
