Carl Gustaf Verner von Heidenstam (1859-1940)

Awarded the Prize “in recognition of his significance as the leading representative of a new era in our literature.”

Swedish poet and prose writer. Heidenstam was born at Olshammar on July 6, 1859. He was sent to Paris to study art at the école des Beaux Arts. His passion to poems made him to abandon the study of painting but to devote himself to his vocation as a poet. Verner von Heidenstam died in Ovralid, Sweden on May 20, 1940.
