Karl Adolph Gjellerup (1857-1919)

Awarded the Prize “for his varied and rich poetry, which is inspired by lofty ideals.”

Denish novelist, poet and playwright. Gjellerup was born on June 2, 1857 in the Roholte vicarage at Praesto, Denmark. He was graduated summa cum laude from Haerslevs Grammar School in 1874. He earned his B.D. (summa cum laude) in June of 1878. He once studied painting in Rome and on his return way home he took a trip to Switzerland, Greece, and Russia. In March of 1892, he settled in Dresden. Gjellerup died in Klotzsche, near Dresden on October 13, 1919.
