Knut Pedersen Hamsun (1859-1952)
Awarded the Prize “for his monumental work, Growth of the Soil.”Norwegian writer. Hamsun was born in Lom, Norway on August 4, 1859. At the age of seventeen he became an apprentice to a ropemaker, and at about the same time he began to write. He spent some years in America, travelling and working at odd jobs. The publication of the novel “Slut” made his standing in Norwegian literature. His last year were spent in poverty and he died in February 19, 1952.
