Jacinto Benavente (1866-1954)
Awarded the Prize “for the happy manner in which he has continued the illustrious traditions of the Spanish drama.”Spanish dramatist. Benavente was born in Madrid on August 12, 1866. He studied law and later abandoned his studies and travelled widely in France, England, and Russia. On his return to Spain he edited, and contributed to, several newspapers and journals. His career as a dramatist began in 1892, and his plays dealt with all strata of life. In his earlier plays Benavente had been chiefly interested in giving a faithful portrait of society, his later works show an increasing concern for a tight dramatic structure. Benavente died in Madrid on July 4, 1954.
