Grazia Deledda (1871-1936)
Awarded the Prize “for her idealistically inspired writings which with plastic clarity picture the life on her native island and with depth and sympathy deal with human problems in general.”Italian novelist. Deledda was born in Nuoro, Sardinia on September 27, 1871. She went only to the elementary school in Nuoro for four years. After this, she had private lessons from an elementary school teacher. Her early works were published without a hitch and she wrote a great deal all her life. Deledda died in Rome on August 15, 1936.
