Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951)

Awarded the Prize “for his vigorous and graphic art of description and his ability to create, with wit and humour, new types of characters.”

American novelist. Lewis was born in Sauk, Minnesota on February 7, 1885. In 1902, Lewis entered the Oberlin Academy, but then moved to Yale University and started to contribute the Yale Literary Magazine. Lewis received his M.A. in 1908 and worked for publishing houses and various magazines in Iowa, Carmel, San Francisco, Washington D.C. and New York City. After publishing two novels, Lewis devoted himself entirely to writing. He died in Rome on January 10, 1951.
