Ivan Alekseyevich Bunin (1870-1953)

Awarded the Prize “for the strict artistry with which he has carried on the classical Russian traditions in prose writing.”

Russian poet and novelist. Bunin was born in Vorinezh, Russia on October 22, 1870. At the age of seventeen Bunin made his debut as a poet, when his poem appeared in a magazine in St. Petersburg. In 1889 he became a local government clerk in Kharkov. Then he took a job as an assistant editor of the newspaper, and worked as a librarian, and district-court statistician. After revolution in October 1917, he left Moscow and moved to Odessa for two years, and eventually, he emigrated to France. Bunin died in Paris on November 8, 1953.
