Eugene Gladstone O’Neill (1888-1953)
Awarded the Prize “for the power, honesty and deep-felt emotions of his dramatic works, which embody an original concept of tragedy.”American dramatist. O’Neill was born in New York, on October 16, 1888. He entered Princeton University in 1906 and left one year later. He worked at various occupations as secretary of a small mail order house, gold digger in Honduras, assistant manager of a theatrical company, sailor, actor and reporter. In 1914, He entered Harvard University to attend the course in dramatic technique but left after one year and did not complete the course. In the late 1910s O’Neill’s dramas began to gain recognition in New York. O’Neill died on November 27, 1953 in Boston.
