Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899-1961)
Awarded the Prize “for his y of the art of narrative, most recently demonstrated in The Old Man and the Sea, and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style.”American novelist, short-story writer and essayist. Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois on July 21, 1899. He started his career as a writer in a newspaper office and later became a reporter. During the twenties of the last century, he began to write. Hemingway committed suicide with his favorite shotgun at his home in Ketchum, Idaho on July 2, 1961.
