Salvatore Quasimodo (1901-1968)
Awarded the Prize “for his lyrical poetry, which with classical fire expresses the tragic experience of life in our own times.”Italian poet, critic and translator. Quasimodo was born in Syracuse, Italy on August 20, 1901. He studied engineering at Polytechnical Institute of Rome but left for financial problem, helding a number of jobs. His first poems were published in 1930. He was named in 1941 professor of Italian literature at Milan’s Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory. Quasimodo died in Naples on June 14, 1968.
