John Steinbeck (1902-1968)

Awarded the Prize “for his realistic and imaginative writings, combining as they do sympathetic humour and keen social perception.”

American novelist. Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California on February 27, 1902. He studied at Stanford University but never graduated. In 1925 he went to New York and tried to be a free-lance writer. He became widely known in 1935 and was engaged in writing since then. Steinbeck died in New York on December 20, 1968.
