Giorgos Seferis (1900-1971)

Awarded the Prize “for his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture.”

Greek poet and diplomat. Seferis was born in Smyrna, Turkey on February 29, 1900. He studied law at the University of Paris and became interested in literature. After graduating he was admitted to the Royal Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1925. During 1957 to 1961 he was Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Seferis died in Athens on September 20, 1971.
