
Shmuel Yosef Agnon (1888-1970)
Awarded the Prize “for his profoundly characteristic narrative art with motifs from the life of the Jewish people.”Israeli novelist. Agnon was born on July 17, 1888 in Buczacz, Galicia (now Buchach, Ukraine). Only studying formally at school for six years, he learned literary and other knowledge from his parents. In 1907 he left home and made his way to Palestine. Agnon died in Rehovot, Israel on February 17, 1970.
