
Miguel Angel Asturias (1899-1974)
Awarded the Prize “for his vivid literary achievement, deep-rooted in the national traits and traditions of Indian peoples of Latin America.”Guatemalan novelist and poet. Asturias was born in Guatemala City on October 19, 1899. He took a law degree at the University of San Carlos. In 1923 he went to Europe to study in London and Paris. In 1966 he was appointed the Guatemalan ambassador to France. Asturias died in Madrid, Spain on June 9, 1974.
