Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934)
Awarded the Prize “in recognition of their work on the structure of the nervous system.”Spanish nervo-anatomist. Cajal was born on May 1, 1852, at Petilla in Aragon, Spain. In 1883 he was nominated Professor of Descriptive and General Anatomy at Valencia and obtained the degree of Doctor of Medicine at Madrid. In 1887 he was nominated Professor of Histology and Pathological Anatomy at Barcelona and in 1892 he was appointed to the same chair at Madrid. Cajal died in Madrid on October 18, 1934.
