Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran (1845-1922)

Awarded the Prize “in recognition of his work on the role played by protozoa in causing diseases.”

French parasitologist. Laveran was born in Paris on June 18, 1845. In 1863, he was admitted to the Public Health School at Strasbourg and in1867 received his doctorate. In 1884, he was appointed Professor of Military Hygiene. In 1894 he was appointed Chief Medical Officer of the military hospital at Lille and then Director of Health Services at Nantes. In 1896 he entered the Pasteur Institute as Chief of the Honorary Service. He was, in 1893, elected a Member of the Academy of Sciences. Laveran died in Paris on May 18, 1922.
