Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov (1845-1916)

Awarded the Prize “in recognition of his work on immunity.”

Russian biologist. Mechnikov was born on May 15, 1845, in Kharkoff in Russia. He graduated from the University of Kharkoff in 1864 and then went to the University of Giessen, the University of G?ttingen and the Munich Academy, where he worked in von Siebold’s laboratory. He taught at the University of St. Petersburg. In 1870 he was appointed Titular Professor of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy at the University of Odessa. In 1988 he went to Paris and took an appointment in the Pasteur Institute. Mechnikov died on July 16, 1916 in Paris.
