Albrecht Kossel (1853-1927)
Awarded the Prize “in recognition of the contributions to our knowledge of cell chemistry made through his work on proteins, including the nucleic substances.”German physiochemist. Kossel was born in Rostock, Germany, on September 16, 1853. In 1872, he went to the University of Strassburg and graduated in 1878. In 1895 he became professor of physiology and director of the Physiological Institute at Marburg, going in 1901 to a similar post at Heidelberg, where he became director of the Heidelberg Institute for Protein Investigation. Kossel died on July 5, 1927, in Heidelberg.
