Alexis Carrel (1873-1944)
Awarded the Prize “in recognition of his work on vascular suture and the transplantation of blood vessels and organs.”French physiologist and surgeon. Carrel was born at Lyons, France, on June 28, 1873. From the University of Lyons, he obtained the degrees of Bachelor of Letters in 1889, Bachelor of Science in 1890 and Doctor of Medicine in 1900. He continued his work at the Lyons Hospital. In 1940 he went to the University of Chicago and worked at the Department of Physiology. He attached to the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in 1906, and became its full member in 1912. Carrel died in Paris on November 5, 1944.
