Otto Fritz Meyerhof (1884-1951)

Awarded the Prize “for his discovery of the fixed relationship between the consumption of oxygen and the metabolism of lactic acid in the muscle.”

American biochemist. Meyerhof was born on April 12, 1884, in Hannover. He was attacked at the age of 16 by kidney trouble and had to spend a long time in bed. By his mother’s companionship, he read much and was matriculated to study medicine at Freiburg, Berlin, Strasbourg, and Heidelberg where he received his M.D. in 1909. He taught at the University of Kiel and in 1929 took charge of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Medical Research. He once was Director of Research at Paris and Research Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Meyerhof died on October
