Karl Landsteiner (1868-1943)

Awarded the Prize “for his discovery of human blood groups.”

American immunologist and pathologist. Landsteiner was born in Vienna on June 14, 1868. He received his M.D. in 1891 from the University of Vienna. In 1908 he was appointed as Prosector in the Wilhelminaspital in Vienna. In 1911 he became Professor of Pathological Anatomy in the University of Vienna. In 1919, he obtained the appointment of Prosector to a small Roman Catholic Hospital at The Hague and after that he joined in the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. Landsteiner died on June 26, 1943 in New York.
