George Hoyt Whipple (1878-1976)

Awarded the Prize “for discoveries concerning liver therapy in cases of anaemia.”

American pathologist. Whipple was born in Ashland, New Hampshire on August 28, 1878. He took his A.B. from Yale in 1900 and M.D. from Johns Hopkins in 1905. He remained there, serving as Assistant, Instructor, Associate and Associate Professor until 1914, when he was appointed Professor of Research Medicine at the University of California Medical School and Director of the Hooper Foundation for Medical Research at that University, being Dean of the Medical School during the years 1920 and 1921. In 1921 he became Professor of Pathology and Dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Rochester. Whipple died in Rochester, N.Y. on February 1,
