Hans Spemann (1869-1941)

Awarded the Prize “for his discovery of the organizer effect in embryonic development.”

German biologist. Spemann was born in Stuttgart, Germany on June 27, 1869. In 1891, he entered the University of Heidelberg to study medicine. From 1894 to 1908, he worked in the Zoological Institute at the University of Würzburg. In 1895 he took his degree in zoology, botany, and physics. In 1908 he became Professor of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy at Rostock, and in 1914, Associate Director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Biology. In 1919 he was appointed Professor of Zoology at the University of Freiburg. Spemann died on September 12, 1941, in Freiburg.
