Otto Loewi (1873-1961)

Awarded the Prize “for his discoveries relating to chemical transmission of nerve impulses.”

American physiologist. Loewi was born on June 3, 1873 in Frankfurt, Germany. He entered in 1891 the Universities of Munich and Strassburg where, in 1896, he took his doctor’s degree. In 1909 he was appointed to the Chair of Pharmacology in the University of Graz. In 1940 he went to the United States and was made research professor at the School of Medicine of New York University. Loewi died on December 25, 1961 in New York.
