Albert von Szent-Györgyi Nagyrapolt (1893-1986)

Awarded the Prize “for his discoveries in connection with the biological combustion processes, with special reference to vitamin C and the catalysis of fumaric acid.”

American biochemist. Szent-Györgyi was born in Budapest, Hungary on September 16, 1893. He earned a medical degree from the University of Budapest in 1917. In 1930 he obtained the Chair of Medical Chemistry at the University of Szeged and in 1935 he also took the Chair in Organic Chemistry. In 1945, he took the Chair of Medical Chemistry at Budapest and in 1947 he settled in the United States where he was Director of Research, Institute of Muscle Research. von Szent-Györgyi died on October 22, 1986 at Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
