
Corneille Jean François Heymans (1892-1968 )
Awarded the Prize “for the discovery of the role played by the sinus and aortic mechanisms in the regulation of respiration.”Belgian physiologist. Heymans was born in Ghent, Belgium on March 28, 1892. He took his M.D. degree from the University of Ghent in 1920. In 1922 he became lecturer at Ghent and in 1930, he became Professor of pharmacology and was appointed Head of the Department of Pharmacology, Pharmacodynamics, and Toxicology. He was Director of the J. F. Heymans Institute. Heymans died in Knokke on July 18, 1968.
