Gerhard Domagk (1895-1964)

Awarded the Prize “for the discovery of the antibacterial effects of prontosil.”

German bacteriologist and pathologist. Domagk was born on October 30, 1895 in Brandenburg, Germany. He took his State Medical Examinations and graduated from the University of Kiel in 1921. He became University Lecturer in Pathological Anatomy at the University of Greifswald in 1924 and held the same post in the University of Münster in 1925. In 1958 he became a professor. He was Foreign Member of the British Academy of Science and of the Royal Society. Domagk died in Burgberg, Germany on April 24, 1964.
