
Sir Howard Walter Florey (1898-1968)
Awarded the Prize “for the discovery of penicillin and its curative effect in various infectious diseases.”Australian pathologist. Florey was born on September 24, 1898 at Adelaide, Australia. In 1921, he graduated from Adelaide University, obtaining M.B. and B.S. degrees. In 1924, he was awarded B.Sc. and M.A. degrees from Magdalen College, Oxford and in 1927 he received his Ph.D. at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. In 1931 he became Chair of Pathology at the University of Sheffield. He became professor of Lincoln College, Oxford in 1935, and Provost of The Queen’s College, Oxford in 1962. He was elected President of the Royal Society in 1960. Florey died on February 21, 1968 at Oxford.
