Bernardo Alberto Houssay (1887-1971)

Awarded the Prize “for his discovery of the part played by the hormone of the anterior pituitary lobe in the metabolism of sugar.”

Argentine physiologist. Houssay was born in Buenos Aires on April 10, 1887. He entered the School of Pharmacy of the University of Buenos Aires at age of 14, and graduated in 1904. He received his M.D. in 1911, then he was appointed professor in the University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. In 1913, he became Chief Physician at the Alvear Hospital and was also in charge of the Laboratory of Experimental Physiology and Pathology in the National Department of Hygiene. He was Professor of Physiology and Director of the Institute of Physiology in the Medical School at Buenos Aires University. Houssay died on September 21, 1971 in Buenos Aires.
