
Tadeus Reichstein (1897-1996)
Awarded the Prize “for the discoveries relating to the hormones of the adrenal cortex, their structure and biological effects.”Swiss chemist. Reichstein was born on July 20, 1897 at Wloclawek, Poland. He was educated at E.T.H. at Zurich, and graduated in 1920 and took his doctorate in 1922. In 1934 he was appointed Titular Professor, in 1937 Associate Professor, and in 1938 Professor in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and Director of the Pharmaceutical Institute in the University of Basel. In 1946 he became the Chair of Organic Chemistry. In 1960, he became the Director of Institute of Organic Chemistry. In 1952 he was elected Foreign Member of the Royal Society, London. Reichstein died on August 1, 1996 in Basel.
